GROUPS...

...personal growth & relational therapy for individuals, couples, and families

Group therapy is a wonderful venue for getting support and new ideas for growth.  Many people find them a helpful and safe place for them to open up and talk about issues that they do not feel safe sharing with friends and family.  Many have said that they do not want people they see every day to know so many details about the problems they are struggling with and sometimes they fear that their problems have been too much of a burden for family and friends.

Because it is a scary thing to come talk to a group of strangers many times people feel like running after one or two sessions.  They do not give themselves or the group a chance to see how it could work for them after the initial anxiety.  It’s important to make a commitment to oneself and the other group members to give it an honest try.  It is hard for the current group members to share their most personal issues and feel safe when a new group member joins too.  This is why I ask each new group member to sign a contract indicating that they understand the group expectations.  Click on the link to see the contract.

I run a number of groups on weekday evenings.  Currently I have a women’s group on Monday evenings from 5-7 pm for women ages 35 and up, a mens group on Tuesday evenings from 5-7 pm and a twenty-something group for women in their 20s and early 30s on Wednesday evenings from 5:30-7 pm. I have had a group for adolescents every year depending on the need so I start them as determined by client need.

Groups do not always have openings nor are they always an appropriate choice for each client.  This would be something we would discuss together and decide in our work together.

GROUP THERAPY POLICY AND EXPECTATIONS

In fairness to you, as well as other group members, this is the contract I have all prospective group clients commit to if we decide that group therapy is an appropriate treatment modality for them.  If after reading these expectations you believe group is something we should discuss in individual sessions, please feel free to contact me by phone at 952.835.1616 or by email at gina@edinacounselingcenter.com .

• TO BEGIN AND END GROUP ON TIME WHENEVER POSSIBLE.

• CALL OR EMAIL TO CANCEL OR INFORM ME OF TIMES YOU WILL BE LATE OR CANCEL.

• ACTIVELY WORK ON ISSUES THAT BROUGHT YOU TO THE GROUP. PART OF THE GROUP PROCESS REQUIRES GROUP MEMBERS TO BE OPEN ABOUT THEIR OWN ISSUES AS WELL AS GIVING OTHER GROUP MEMBERS OPEN AND HONEST FEEDBACK. IT IS EACH GROUP MEMBERS RESPONSIBILITY TO ASK FOR TIME OR FEEDBACK OR WHAT THEY NEED DURING GROUP TIME.

• MAKE AN INITIAL 10 WEEK COMMITMENT TO THE GROUP PROCESS AND BE EXPECTED TO PAY THE FULL GROUP FEE WHETHER OR NOT YOU COMPLETE YOUR COMMITMENT. THE 10 WEEK COMMITMENT PROVIDES THE NEW GROUP MEMBER WITH TIME TO GET OVER INITIAL DISCOMFORT AND SEE IF THE GROUP WILL BE HELPFUL AS WELL AS PROVIDING THE OLD GROUP MEMBERS WITH ASSURANCE THAT THE GROUP IS SAFE FOR THEM TO SHARE PERSONAL INFORMATION.

• EACH GROUP MEMBER IS ALLOWED 4 GROUPS PER CALENDAR YEAR TO HAVE A PREARRANGED ABSENCE WITHOUT HAVING TO PAY. ANY MISSED GROUPS OVER THAT AMOUNT WILL HAVE TO BE PAID FOR OUT OF POCKET (INSURANCE WILL NOT COVER MISSED GROUPS)

• GIVE A MINIMUM OF 2 WEEKS NOTICE TO TERMINATE GROUP TO GIVE THE GROUP TIME TO PROCESS YOUR LEAVING AND SAY GOOD-BYE.

• CONFIDENTIALITY IS THE MAINSTAY OF THE GROUP. WHAT IS SAID AND HEARD IN THE GROUP STAYS IN THE GROUP AND SHOULD NOT BE DISCUSSED OUTSIDE OF GROUP EVEN WITH OTHER GROUP MEMBERS. YOU CAN DISCUSS WHAT YOU TALKED ABOUT IN GROUP BUT NOT WHAT OTHERS SAY. IF ANYONE IN GROUP DOES DISCUSS INFORMATION OUTSIDE OF GROUP IT IS EXPECTED THAT THEY WILL BRING THIS BACK TO GROUP FOR DISCUSSION.
